Be perceived as an expert

Wikepedia defines an expert as,
‘Someone widely recognised as a reliable source of knowledge, technique or skill’
The three words which interest me here are knowledge, technique and skill.
What does it mean to have knowledge and skill within a field?
What level of knowledge and skill makes an individual or organisation an expert within that field?
‘ Someone who has done most mistakes in a specialized field.’ :) .. I would say
Being ‘Perceived’
Most people may associate the word perceived as something that is not fact. This most certainly does not mean you have to be dishonest in order to be perceived as an expert. In this context what is being perceived is in the eye of the beholder. Therefore the first question I would ask to address is this, how do you judge the level of expertise….
For example if you have a degree in computer science does this mean you are an expert? If your organization is certified Microsoft partner does this make you an expert?
Certification and education does most definitely represent a certain level of knowledge. But does this make an individual or organization an expert.
I believe to be perceived as an expert it is vital to be able to demonstrate your expertise (knowledge, skill and techniques) in practise and see measurable results achieved from it. You must be able to confidently talk about and offer sound advice and services at all level within your field of expertise. Confidently demonstrate knowledge.
The best way to know if you or your organisation is an expert in its field is to ask yourself the following simple questions..
1. Do you find your self talking more or listening and learning from others?
2. If your a business –> are you able to provide the best possible knowledge, skill and technique within your field, hence are you
reaching your highest potential in order to offer the best possible service ? Are there any gaps?
3. Are your clients happy with the level of service and advice they are receiving?
4. As a professional can you confidently discuss your field of expertise and provide advice?
I believe it a combination of skills and demonstrable actions which will enable one to perceive you as an expert.
What you can do to be perceived as an expert within your field…
> develop your knowledge - spend a selected amount of time each day reading about your field of expertise, this can be articles, news, books etc..
> Network and share ideas with people within your field/ industry
> Attend Seminars or talks within your fields
> Look for ways to help advance your skills and knowledge
> Look for courses to help develop your technique and skills within your field

If you are an expert in your field, it would be great to have your input, comments and views.

Many Thanks

Rajeev
